On Nov. 11, 2022, our Masters of Accountancy and Masters of Taxation graduate students hosted the 6th Annual Continuing Professional Education (CPE) Conference held on Baylor’s campus. The annual CPE Conference gives graduate students the opportunity to work in teams throughout the semester to utilize and strengthen their accounting research and communication skills, with the end goal to provide a professional service to the community. More than 60 local certified public accountants (CPAs) attended this year’s Conference, with each participant earning up to seven hours of free CPE credit.

The CPE Conference included 20 sessions lasting 50 minutes each. During these sessions, graduate student teams presented topics ranging from federal tax updates to data analytics and visualization software usage to accounting for digital assets. The most highly attended sessions included Interesting Tax Breaks You May Not Have Heard About; Airbnbs: How Taxing Are They?; and The Powers of Microsoft: Query, Pivot, and BI. The breadth of session subject matter gave conference participants a wide variety of topics from which to choose.

Conference participant evaluation forms commented on students’ engaging presentation styles, expertise in content matter, and overall enjoyment interacting with students who will soon be entering the workforce. The majority of the graduate students who presented during the Conference plan to graduate in May 2023. The CPE Conference continues to be an effective learning tool, giving students the opportunity to work in a team setting and refine communication and collaboration skills. Additionally, it serves as a fun, interactive event between students and professionals in the community. We look forward to hosting the CPE Conference again in fall 2023.
