Students and faculty from our Department of Accounting and Business Law continued our extensive involvement in the IRS' Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program this past spring. For the second straight year, we partnered with two area high schools: La Vega High and University High. Thirty-eight accounting majors and three faculty members worked with students and teachers from these schools to prepare and file tax returns at no cost to the eligible taxpayers in the community. Once again, our students rose to the occasion as the program continued to face challenges and protocols due to COVID. Our Baylor representatives were heavily involved in the preparation and quality review of more than 600 tax returns, generating in excess of $1.1 million in refunds for Waco-area taxpayers. A significant number of these taxpayers continued to benefit from specific COVID-relief enacted by Congress.
