Dean's List: AI

Artificial intelligence (AI) has been a hot topic as it is implemented across a variety of industries. Sandeep Mazumder, PhD, the William E. Crenshaw Endowed Dean of the Hankamer School of Business, shares his top five most intriguing AI applications and issues.

5. Predictive Maintenance

Things break down over time and require fixing. If sensors are incorporated into future equipment and machinery, AI might be able to track down potential failures ahead of time and help us fix these issues before service actually stops in the event of a mechanical failure.

4. Law

I imagine the time it takes lawyers to read through a mountain of documents regarding policy and legislation could be dramatically reduced with the help of AI.

3. Business Ethics

AI is a very powerful tool that can lead to many efficiency improvements, but it will also bring about new ethical issues that need to be carefully weighed. For business schools, it’s imperative that we continue to teach our students how to navigate industry and business in a way that upholds morals, values and ethics.

2. Transportation

Driverless cars have been talked about for years. While it may not happen in my lifetime, I expect at some point in the future, AI will make driverless cars a reality.

1. Healthcare

In my opinion, AI could help identify patterns in patients’ health using large amounts of data in ways that have a large, positive impact on lives.
