First Baylor Finance Dinner in New York City

December 10, 2024

On Dec. 6, the Baylor University Office of Investments, along with one of the University’s investment managers, Engaged Capital out of Newport Beach, California, hosted the first-ever dinner in New York City for Finance alumni from the Hankamer School of Business. The Office of Investments organized the dinner to “plant a flag for Baylor” in the global financial capital and begin bringing together Baylor Finance graduates from across New York City.

Baylor’s Chief Investment Officer Dave Morehead welcomed alumni to the dinner and shared his vision for expanding the gathering in future years.

“Not only do we think it’s important to have more Baylor graduates in New York City, but we believe Baylor students are almost ideally suited for portfolio allocation roles at universities, hospitals, community foundations, and family offices,” Morehead said. “The combination of a strong ethical standing and a commitment to ‘doing the right thing’ along with a solid core curriculum and hands-on experience, is tough to beat in this space.”

Having taught the Large Cap/Small Cap Practicum classes at the Business School for the past five years, Morehead knows firsthand the quality of Baylor’s Finance students.

“While teaching equity analysis for one of the largest student-managed investment portfolios in the country, I’ve been impressed by the quality and depth of work demonstrated by Baylor finance students,” Morehead said. “So much so, that we continue to hire Baylor graduates to manage Baylor’s $2.2 billion endowment. In a space where university investment offices are frequently staffed by alums, Baylor’s endowment returns speak to the quality of Baylor’s Finance students.”

The Office of Investments anticipates morphing its internship program into an “Allocator Clinic” in forthcoming years, to enable more Baylor Finance students to learn about and prepare for a career in portfolio management.

Going forward, the Office of Investments will continue to host this annual New York City Finance dinner and will look for more ways to connect with Baylor’s strong Finance alumni base. Next year’s dinner will be hosted by Neuberger Berman, one of the University’s investment managers.
