Baylor University’s Hankamer School of Business (HSB) announced today that Anthony Lapes has been named Assistant Dean for AI and Business Technology. Lapes has served as Assistant Dean for Operations at the Business School, and this updated role reflects HSB’s commitment to advancing business education in an era increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence.

“Business leaders today must be more than just technologically competent,” said David M. Szymanski, William E. Crenshaw Endowed Dean of the Hankamer School of Business. “They must also be highly skilled, ethical and innovative leaders who know how to leverage technologies like AI for the good of organizations and society. This appointment reflects our determination to prepare Baylor graduates to lead with both wisdom and vision.”

Lapes came to Baylor in 1990 as a programmer, advancing through the university alongside the growth and adoption of technology.

“Anthony is the perfect person to lead this initiative at the Business School,” Szymanski said. “His expertise and leadership in this area are deep and his impact in technology and innovation is recognized in the Business School and across the University as a whole.”

AI learning has been a focal point of Szymanski’s direction for HSB since becoming dean in May. Beginning this fall 2025 semester, every class in the Business School includes a component of AI learning.

In his expanded leadership role, Lapes will continue to lead the HSB Technology Center while also guiding the integration of artificial intelligence tools and emerging technologies into the curriculum and research, ensuring Baylor business students graduate with the skills and discernment to thrive in a rapidly evolving marketplace.

The Hankamer School of Business has long emphasized the importance of preparing students for the intersection of faith, values and business practice. By formally recognizing the role of AI in business technology leadership, the school underscores its proactive approach to equipping students not only with technical expertise but also with the ethical grounding to make sound decisions in a complex world.

“We are developing the leaders of tomorrow at Hankamer who are grounded in our Christian mission and values,” Szymanski said. “Baylor Business graduates are individuals equipped to make a difference in the world tomorrow through the way they are being prepared today.”
