Impactful Scholarship Takes Center Stage at HSB Research Symposium
Baylor University’s Hankamer School of Business (HSB) hosted the third annual HSB Research Symposium on Friday, April 4. The focus of the event centered on effective research publishing and the use of AI in research.
“In our pursuit and commitment to purposeful research, the HSB Research Symposium serves as yet another way for faculty at Hankamer to learn from each other and from prominent voices in the academic landscape,” said Mitch Neubert, PhD, senior associate dean of Research and Faculty Development.
Noted academic and Management scholar Marc Gruber, PhD, addressed the attendees of the symposium via video from his home in Switzerland. Gruber serves as professor at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne and holds the chair of Entrepreneurship and Technology Commercialization at EPFL’s College of Management of Technology. Gruber also serves as editor-in-chief of the Academy of Management Journal and was named in 2016 among the five most influential researchers worldwide in entrepreneurship research.
Gruber discussed his experience publishing research both as an academic and from the standpoint of editor, acknowledging the rigorous process researchers must go through to be published in industry journals and publications.
“The research enterprise has evolved to be a more globalized and open-access model,” Gruber said. “I have a belief that in this rapidly changing world, scientific research has a significant role to play. We must communicate well and cultivate that skill and responsibility as scientists.”
Symposium attendees also heard from Ellen Filgo, director of the Liaison Program for Baylor Libraries, who gave a presentation on Elicit, an AI tool that helps find and identify keywords in research. Jonathan Seward, PhD, lecturer in Economics, shared firsthand experience from his own AI usage in research.
Also during the symposium, Neubert and Sandeep Mazumder, PhD, the William E. Crenshaw Endowed Dean of the Business School, recognized faculty receiving awards for teaching, service and scholarship. Faculty included:
