People-First Leadership
Our Management majors at Baylor University’s Hankamer School of Business stand out with their unique approach of putting people first. This principle found in Philippians 2:3 encourages our students to excel not from selfish ambition but to count others above self. That ethos, ingrained in our students, underscores that success is a product of teamwork, understanding, and commitment to each other. It's not just a slogan, but a guiding principle that shapes our students’ approach to business and leadership. The Management major at Baylor is dedicated to preparing the next generation of global business, nonprofit, law, medical and church leaders. We instill in them a Christ-centered commitment to each other through experience, networking and community building.
Experiences
Good managers are adept in their field and committed to lifelong learning. Baylor Management majors are learning about business with hands-on experiences abroad, nationally and in the classroom. Our students were engaged in study abroad and missions in Europe, Africa and Asia this past year exposing them to best business practices and cultural integration. Students enrolled in the Internship in Management course learned work environment lessons in managing people, managing a budget and/or managing a project, which are vital skills in the workplace. Other students in Management Consulting developed critical analysis skills and then applied the concepts in class to analyze actual organizations and businesses to assist them in developing solutions and overcoming obstacles.
Management majors had the opportunity to participate in a fall and spring employment negotiations workshop led by Emily Hunter, PhD, and Judge Matthew Wright. This workshop significantly enhanced the confidence and skills of our students as they prepared to enter the workforce. The impact was tangible, with several students reporting immediate increases in salary and benefits, a direct result of the skills they had learned and applied.
Networking
Our students have had the invaluable opportunity to network with employers and leaders in various industries, including banking, sales, law and healthcare, during our Friday lunches. These sessions have been a source of inspiration, allowing small groups of students to ask questions about their chosen professions, the future of work and how to best position themselves for the transition from university to employment.
Notably, our Management majors interested in healthcare had the chance to spend time with Baylor Scott & White Executive Dr. Andrejs Avots-Avotins, the McLane Chair in Health & Wellness and vice president of Medical Affairs. During their conversation, Avots and the students engaged in a lively discussion about the necessary changes in the business of healthcare to meet the nation’s growing needs. Avots also shared valuable insights on how students can manage medical school and learn about the business side while staying focused on the mission of health for all of God’s kingdom.
Community
The 2024-2025 academic year kicked off with the “Bear Days of Summer” Management Major Orientation! The students heard from alumni, employers and faculty on how to make the most of the year. Then, the students took over the Foster building during a Business School Scavenger Hunt, visiting the Christian Leadership and Ethics Center, McBride Center for International Business, Career Services and the Department of Management. They ended with cheers from Bruiser and Marigold, our Baylor mascots!
Throughout the semester, students and faculty gather for Management Suite Treat Days. Each month, more than 100 students and faculty mingle and enjoy themed treats ranging from Gold Fish & Trail Mix to Mardi Gras to Cookies with Hot Cocoa.
As we close the year, the major will say goodbye to our graduating seniors at the “Equipping for Success” Life Orientation. The students receive a gift from the faculty and advice from young alumni and employers on how to navigate the transition from college to work life.
