From Classroom to Careers: Pathways in Risk Management and Insurance
Gamma Iota Sigma (GIS) at Baylor University is playing a central role in connecting classroom learning with real-world careers in risk management and insurance. Through industry conferences, professional travel and direct engagement with practitioners, students are gaining early clarity about a field that is both dynamic and essential to the global economy.
A defining element of the GIS experience is participation in major industry conferences, where students engage directly with professionals and explore the breadth of the insurance ecosystem. These events expose students to emerging risks, market innovation and global challenges, while introducing them to career paths across underwriting, brokerage, reinsurance, claims, specialty insurance and corporate risk management.
Students consistently highlighted the impact of these experiences. Ashley Ring, who attended the WSIA Extreme Risk Takers Symposium, noted that the conference deepened her understanding of the wholesale and specialty insurance space, particularly regarding emerging and unconventional risks. Matthew Davis similarly reflected that representing Baylor at the WSIA Symposium helped clarify how different roles within insurance fit together and provided a clearer sense of potential career paths.
At the national level, Blake Baldwin described the Gamma Iota Sigma Annual Conference as eye-opening, particularly in understanding how interconnected the insurance ecosystem is – from reinsurance structures to claims financing. Sean Anderson, who participated in the Houston Marine & Energy Insurance Conference, emphasized that discussions on topics such as offshore energy development and geopolitical risk highlighted how global dynamics shape risk and influence industry decision-making.
Beyond conferences, GIS strengthens career formation by bringing industry professionals directly into the classroom. Guest speakers and risk management panels provide students with practical insight into how decisions are made in real business settings. Thaddaeus Gaulke noted that these interactions made classroom concepts more tangible and demonstrated how risk management principles are applied in practice.
In addition to sharing their career journeys, industry professionals also engage directly with students through project-based interaction. Risk manager panels provide feedback on student work and serve as judges for group presentations, offering exposure to real-world evaluation and decision-making processes. These experiences not only enhance technical understanding but also build confidence and professional readiness.
These opportunities are made possible through strong collaboration between Baylor and its industry partners, including the Houston Marine & Energy Insurance Conference, DFW RIMS, the Insurance Council of Texas, Gamma Iota Sigma, and the Wholesale & Specialty Insurance Association, among others. Their continued engagement reflects a shared commitment to developing the next generation of professionals in the field.
Through this integrated approach – combining academic preparation, industry exposure, and mentorship – GIS is helping students discover the breadth of opportunities in risk management and insurance while equipping them to pursue meaningful, impactful careers. As students gain earlier clarity and stronger preparation, they are better positioned not only for their first roles but for long-term leadership in an industry that plays a critical role across every sector of the economy.
