Finance Night: Scaling Student Formation with Intentional Design
Finance Night represents a strategic step in the Department of Finance’s effort to align rapid program growth with intentional student formation and career readiness.
Over the past four years, the number of Finance majors has steadily increased by approximately 53 percent, from 485 to more than 740 students in spring 2026. This growth reflects strong student demand, but also a clear responsibility: ensuring that students are prepared to navigate increasingly competitive and specialized career paths.
Finance Night was developed to address this need directly. Its purpose is focused: provide early clarity. Many students enter the major with strong ability, yet limited visibility into the distinct paths within finance or the preparation required for each. By bringing together alumni and practitioners, the event offers a structured first exposure to these realities.
The initiative was made possible through the generosity of donors committed to strengthening student formation and career readiness. Their support enables high-impact experiences that extend beyond the classroom.
The program was structured around three primary career paths: investment banking and advising, corporate finance, and wealth management and institutional investing, with additional perspectives in energy finance, real estate, and insurance and risk management. This structure was intentionally designed to help students translate a broad field into clear, actionable pathways.
The panel featured recent Baylor graduates, typically within two to five years of graduation, offering relevant and current insights. Participating firms included Stephens, Deutsche Bank, BP, Walmart, Dell, Transwestern, QBE and Goldman Sachs (Ayco), reflecting both the diversity of opportunities and the strength of Baylor’s alumni network.
The evening combined structured panels with direct networking. Panelists emphasized consistent themes: the importance of building relationships early, approaching recruiting with discipline, and committing to sustained effort and rigorous preparation. These insights helped students move from general interest to concrete next steps.
The response confirmed the importance of this initiative. Approximately 225 students attended, with strong engagement throughout. Post-event survey data reinforced this impact: approximately 80 percent of students reported that the event helped clarify their career paths, with the most valued component being the opportunity to hear directly from alumni about day-to-day roles and early-career experiences. As one student noted, “Hearing directly from alumni made the different paths in finance clearer and showed what I should be doing now to prepare.”
The survey also highlighted an important opportunity for further development. While overall engagement was high, many students had limited interaction during the networking portion of the event, suggesting the need for more structured preparation and guided engagement. This insight will inform future iterations of Finance Night, as well as the design of related initiatives.
Alumni engagement was equally meaningful. Panelists expressed genuine fulfillment in returning to campus and investing in students, reinforcing a strong sense of continuity and community within Baylor Finance.
Finance Night is part of a broader effort to strengthen student outcomes. Beginning in fall 2026, the department will launch FIN 3101: Foundations in Finance Careers, offering structured, continuous career preparation. Alongside expanded career support, this ensures that initiatives like Finance Night are part of a coherent and scalable development pipeline.
Notably, survey responses also indicated strong interest in continued academic formation, with a significant share of students expressing openness to pursuing a future Master of Science in Finance. This provides an early signal of demand for advanced, structured pathways that build on the clarity and preparation initiated through events like Finance Night.
Given the strong response from students and alumni, the department plans to expand this initiative, with the next Finance Night expected in fall 2026.
In this way, Finance Night reflects Baylor’s mission to form graduates who pursue excellence with discipline and purpose, grounded in service and a commitment to use their talents for the greater good.
