For Terry L. Specht Jr., a National Accounts Manager overseeing complex customer relationships and long-term growth strategies, pursuing an Executive MBA was a goal, years in the making. Enrolling in the Baylor MBA in Dallas for Executives and Professionals also allowed him to lead in a demanding commercial role.
“Early in my career, I had planned to begin graduate studies after gaining a few years of experience, but life and career opportunities led me down a different path.” Specht said.
Promotions, relocations and family commitments delayed that goal, but Specht said the timing eventually aligned. As he evaluated programs, Baylor stood apart.
“I had investigated other universities, but Baylor felt special to me,” he said. “I was inspired to pursue the Baylor MBA in Dallas for Executives and Professionals because I wanted to continue growing as a leader while staying fully engaged in my career.”
Sharpening Strategic Thinking
Managing national accounts requires balancing immediate performance with long-term growth. Specht said, “The program has strengthened my ability to step back and look beyond short-term outcomes.”
Several Executive MBA courses played a central role in driving career growth.
“I am especially proud of my new skill set when it comes to accounting, economics and finance,” Specht said. “I believe these courses are the foundation of the program that has provided me with the platform to support my customer base.”
That foundation, he said, has reshaped the way he approaches partnerships.
“I now approach relationships with a stronger focus on long-term alignment, trust, and shared success,” Specht said.
Elevating Executive-Level Conversations
Specht said the program quickly began to influence how he engaged with senior stakeholders. In one case, it changed the trajectory of a long-standing customer relationship.
“When I began my role as National Accounts Manager, one of our largest customers had significant potential for growth, but sales had remained flat or even declined over several years,” he said.
The MBA in Dallas enabled him to move beyond transactional conversations.
“The program gave me stronger frameworks for discussing value creation, financial impact, and long-term strategy,” Specht said.
“This (shift) led me to launch an initiative called Project Synergy to address the key barriers that were limiting our success with this customer,” he said.
The result was a different level of engagement with executive leadership and the ability to speak with greater confidence at an executive level.
Leading With Integrity
A class discussion and assigned reading in Leading with Integrity reframed Specht’s approach to leadership and communication.
“I have become more intentional about asking better questions, understanding different perspectives, and aligning teams around a shared goal,” he said.
That emphasis on trust and clarity now extends across both internal teams and external partners.
Strategy Grounded in Real-World Application
“I gained a much deeper understanding about the importance of balancing data-driven decision-making with relationship management, market dynamics, and long-term customer needs,” Specht said.
From calculating market size to evaluating customer lifetime value, those tools now guide his decision-making.
“They have helped me build strategies that are not only ambitious, but also realistic and sustainable,” he said.
Learning Through Community
While the curriculum has been impactful, Specht said the people have been just as influential.
“More than anything, I am deeply grateful for the people in my cohort,” he said. “The talent, character, and heart within this group have been truly inspiring.”
Learning alongside experienced professionals expanded his perspective on leadership and collaboration.
“It reminded me that there is rarely only one right answer in business, and that collaboration often leads to stronger decisions,” Specht said.
He credits the cohort’s encouragement and shared experience for making the demanding program worthwhile.
“Their friendship, encouragement, and the countless conversations that made every class, every project, and every long night worthwhile,” he said.
Values in Action
Baylor’s emphasis on values-based leadership strongly aligned with Specht’s own philosophy.
“One of the most meaningful leadership lessons reinforced through the Baylor MBA in Dallas for Executives and Professionals program is the principle of servant leadership,” he said.
That approach shapes how he serves clients and represents his organization.
“In my role, this means always putting relationships first, doing what is right for our clients, and representing my organization with professionalism and honesty,” Specht said.
Looking Ahead
As he looks to the future at Valent, Specht said the Baylor Executive MBA has provided both skills and a lasting network.
“My Baylor family has become a network of trusted advisors that I know I can turn to whenever challenges arise,” he said.
The experience is also deeply personal. Watching his son begin his own Baylor journey later influenced Specht’s decision to enroll.
“Seeing my son begin his journey at Baylor had a profound impact on my decision to enroll,” he said. “In many ways, it has made this journey even more personal and rewarding.”
For Specht, the Baylor MBA in Dallas for Executives and Professionals has been more than an academic milestone; it has been a transformational leadership experience grounded in integrity, service and long-term impact.
