Learning directly from people operating at the intersection of policy and business gave me a clearer understanding of how legislative decisions influence markets, investor sentiment and business strategy. As someone who advises clients on investment decisions, those discussions immediately changed the way I thought about connecting public policy to real world market outcomes.”

It bridged the gap between online coursework and real-world experiential learning and reminded me that some of the most meaningful growth happens when you step outside your comfort zone.”

“What struck me most was how naturally everyone came together,” Raul said. “It may sound scripted, but every person in that cohort genuinely embraced the idea of servant leadership. People were eager to connect, collaborate and invest in one another. That experience alone deepened my connection to Baylor, its Christian mission and what the university truly stands for. I left with friendships and connections I expect to carry well beyond this program.”

Throughout the week, students engaged with faculty members, policymakers and business professionals. While formal presentations offered valuable insights, some of the most meaningful lessons emerged in conversations between scheduled sessions.

“What stood out to me most was how naturally everyone connected, whether it was faculty, classmates, or the business and policy leaders we met throughout the week,” Raul said. “Some of the most valuable conversations happened outside the formal sessions, where people were genuinely invested in sharing their experiences and learning from one another. That environment reinforced that leadership is built through relationships, curiosity and a willingness to invest in others. It's a perspective I'll carry forward in both my career and personal life.”

His reflection aligns closely with Baylor’s approach to leadership development. Leadership is not simply about influence or achievement. It is about character, integrity and creating opportunities for others to thrive. 

Lead With Purpose

When the trip concluded, Raul returned home with more than new knowledge and professional connections. He left with a clearer picture of the leader he wants to become.

“This experience challenged me to think beyond my own career and consider the impact I can have on others,” he said. “I left Washington inspired by leaders who were generous with their knowledge, their time, and their mentorship. Moving forward, I want to lead with that same spirit by serving others, investing in those around me, and creating meaningful opportunities within my organization and community.”
