Paisley Williams: MBA Career and Networking Success
Turning Skills Into a Strong Personal Value Proposition
I knew that a lot of the jobs I was applying for wanted more work experience than I had, but I also knew that my soft and hard skills could make me a competitive applicant among someone who maybe had more work experience. The Career Center sat with me for specialized interviews, asking me industry-related questions, and conducted the interview at a competitive level. This helped me better prepare for a major portion of the interview process, as well as be able to effectively communicate my value to recruiters, which has allowed me to advocate for myself and my career.
Data-Driven Resume Support That Gets You Noticed
The resume is almost always the first line of contact a recruiter sees, so personalizing it to each job helps you stand out. Using the MBA template and Job Scan to identify areas where my current resume could stand out through filtering software and recruiters was monumental in my job search. Likewise, being able to attend the Career Fair and workshops into Professional Development helped me fine-tune skills necessary to succeed in the workplace.
Intentional Guidance That Focuses on Your Interests—not Assumptions
The Career Compass was a tool the Career Center used that gave me a broad range of companies that were hiring, but it helped mitigate the initial research I had to do to find the jobs. This saved me time looking for viable companies but gave me a great starting point! Alongside this, the Career Center team did a great job of consistently asking me questions about where I wanted to go in the future and what my interests were, instead of assuming what I wanted to do based on my strengths.
End-to-End Support That Turns Networking Into Job Offers
Through the Career Center, I was able to attend the National Black Convention in Washington, D.C. I was challenged and certainly pushed out of my comfort zone, but the Career Center prepared me by doing prep work on companies, personalizing my resumes for my top companies, as well as basic tips for talking to recruiters. I felt confident going into my conversations with FedEx and landed an internship with them that has turned into a full-time job! The Career Center team walked me through the process from start to finish and ensured I felt confident in my decision to accept the offer, as well as ensuring I was getting a good offer.
