Consulting Excellence
The Management Consulting class, MGT 3455, was privileged to be able to work on 24 customer projects in the 2023-2024 school year. At the end of each semester, there was a competition judged by five consulting firm senior executives/partners that picked the top three teams.
Today we highlight the first place fall 2023 class project with the Mayborn Museum gift shop. A prior class project team helped the gift shop significantly increase its annual budget, but this increase highlighted the need for a better inventory strategy. However, this new strategy would require a significant improvement in their data analytics and visibility for inventory management.
The fall 2023 project team worked closely with the Mayborn customer to integrate multiple data sources to create a Key Process Initiative (KPI) dashboard in PowerBI that:
- Displays profit and margin by inventory item and category
- Includes a catalog of vendors
- Has several visuals to display
- Provides an instructional video on how to update the dashboard
The new dashboard greatly enhances Mayborn’s ability to achieve their new strategy shown by this direct customer quote:
“The other museum staff that came echoed more than once to me how impressed they were with the final project,” said a member of the Mayborn staff. “The KPI Dashboard that was put together will allow us to look at our data in so many different ways. I feel like it will help us decide on products in the future. This is exactly what we asked in the beginning and by looking at our system in place they found a way to give us that without having us completely change our current processes.”
