HSB Professors Win Prestigious Research Award

October 31, 2023

Two Hankamer School of Business faculty members received the 2023 Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) Research Award this fall from the American Risk and Insurance Association (ARIA) in Washington, D.C.

David Dicks, assistant professor of Finance, and James Garven, the Frank S. Groner Memorial Chair of Finance, won the award for their research, “Asymmetric Information and Insurance Cycles,” published in the June 2022 issue of the Journal of Risk and Insurance.

The CAS Research Award is awarded to the research paper published in an ARIA journal that provides the most valuable contribution to CAS. The articles are evaluated on two objectives—promoting research on topics of concern to casualty actuaries and making members of CAS more aware of current research findings.

Dicks and Garven are the first winners of the CAS Research Award from Baylor University since its inception in 1997. The pair received a $1,000 prize and an expense-paid trip to one of the CAS meetings to present their paper.
