From Application to Orientation: A Guide to the MBA Journey
Pursuing an MBA for a career change, job advancement or expanding early-career options means admission to a quality business school. Careful planning and strong execution in the MBA application process can result in acceptance. But application mistakes like applying too early or too late, failing to tailor your application to your desired school or ignoring increased competition for available openings can lead to missed opportunities to gain admittance.
If you feel overwhelmed by application research, are uncertain about what to do first or how long the process could take, have anxiety about how to fund your MBA program, deadlines, assembling your application materials or the dreaded “wait and see” phase, this guide will help you each step of the way.
How does the MBA application process work?
With clear timelines, supportive admissions advisors, awareness of available scholarships and understanding the logistics of your school visit, you will be prepared for the application process and ready for Day 1 of your MBA program.

Why is clarity important when applying to an MBA?
A successful MBA application is a rewarding process that benefits from thoughtful preparation. Although the MBA admissions process includes several stages, taking them one at a time makes it highly manageable.

What should be on your MBA application checklist?
Before applying, create a clear, practical checklist. Sharon Mawet, director of graduate enrollment at the Hankamer Business School, said, “A clear, practical checklist helps applicants approach the MBA process with confidence. When you know exactly what to prepare, you’re able to focus on presenting your story with clarity rather than scrambling to meet requirements.”
The checklist should include your:
Résumé
Transcripts
Essays
Recommendations
Interview preparation
Suggested timeline to stay on track
Note: Test scores are not required for the Baylor Online MBA or MBA in Dallas for Executives and Professionals. The Full-Time MBA test is optional.
With so much in the process, applicants might be tempted to overlook solid recommendations. Don’t. “Strong recommendations are essential because they provide context and credibility to an applicant’s professional narrative,” said Mawet. “I always encourage applicants to invest time with their recommenders. That preparation leads to authentic, detailed insight in a recommendation letter that strengthens the entire application.”
How can you pay for an MBA through financial aid and scholarships?
You aren’t finished with the application process until you have an idea about how you will fund your MBA. This means understanding tuition and the total cost of each program.
Be sure to fully explore the available scholarship opportunities. Scholarship lists are available through online databases and school websites (check Baylor’s FTMBA scholarship info, MBA in Dallas or here for the OMBA). If you are a Veteran, consider applying for a Military MBA Merit Scholarship.
As you review financial aid options and assistantships, consider the contributions you, your family or your current employer can make toward your total costs.
Even here, you are not alone! Baylor’s structured, effective approach provides assistance at each step of the way.
What happens after you receive an MBA admissions decision?
To avoid being too early or too late, list the appropriate deadlines for each school where you apply. Be ready to submit your deposit when you apply and remember you can attend one of our regular, virtual admissions sessions to ask any questions about your application.
Stay connected with your advisors and the MBA community who will be ready to welcome you to the program.
And don’t forget to read your pre-arrival information and prep work.
What can you expect from MBA orientation?
Orientation at Baylor consists of online webinars, networking events, meeting classmates, faculty and staff. New students participate in leadership and team-building activities.
Also important is how orientation builds confidence and community. Ryan Bean, Online MBA candidate, said, “During the orientation process, and even post-acceptance, McKenna Lalani (assistant director of student support) and Kelly Gould were extremely helpful and are always available for any sort of questions and guidance, serving as a secondary support system for new and current graduate students.
“As an Online MBA student, my fear was being disconnected from the campus community and not feeling like a ‘real’ student per se,” he said. “Baylor has done an incredible job at allowing online students to take advantage of the campus, the faculty and staff and traditional resources.”
What is the best way to manage the MBA application process?
Baylor offers a structured, student-centered admissions journey with guidance at every step. At each stage of the process, from research and application to financial planning, onboarding and orientation, Baylor has the resources to help you succeed.
