HSB Professors Win Prestigious Prize

December 20, 2023

Four Hankamer School of Business (HSB) professors earned the Georgescu-Roegen Prize from the Southern Economic Association (SEA) last month.

Professors Steven Bradley, James Garven, Wilson Law and James West received the prize at SEA’s 93rd Annual Meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana, on Nov. 19, 2023. The Georgescu-Roegen Prize is awarded to the best academic article in the Southern Economic Journal each year. The HSB faculty members received the award for their article, “The Impact of Chief Diversity Officers on Diverse Faculty Hiring.”

Prior studies on the effects of chief diversity officers had been qualitative case studies, West, the W.H. Smith Professor of Economics, said. The paper submitted by the four HSB professors is the first large-scale quantitative study and required them to gather their own data from university web pages and press releases.

“Given the importance and sensitivity of the topic, our desire was to produce a very high-quality paper,” West said. “We are grateful to the editor of the Southern Economic Journal for selecting our paper for this award.”
